What’s wrong with 64 bit?

I woke up early today just to found out Adobe confirmed they will never (and ever) make their Flash into iXXX market (just the letter ‘i’ is the company’s trademark). So I think this is the best time to write a blog and express my longtime anguish and my excruciating distress against flash. So here it is…

Q: Why so many people afraid of it?

A: Because lot of people didn’t know about it and its advantages. Spend time reading Wikipedia.

Q: Why so many people still wants the legacy 32 bit apps running on their desktop?

A: Similar answer to question #1.  And since many lazy software developers didn’t comply to rewrite or write their code to be 64bit natively, people who has 64bit operating system (mandatory for them if they had 4GB of RAM and more)  chooses the alternative 32bit version of the software they wanted and as a result..a performance degradation (its not a typo error). Little they know (as far as Windows users is concerned, Linux OS has no trouble dealing with 64bit as Windows is)  a 32bit software  running on 64 bit operating system does not directly executed rather have to convert those 32bit instructions to 64bit compatible via WoW64 before the operating system passed it to the system processor.Do not worry, most people doesn’t care it anyway as long as it runs.

Q: Why is it I’m totally agreed with Steve Jobs (as you know, I’m a huge Microsoft fan) to disallow Flash on mobile web market. And for me not being a game enthusiast, kill the Flash also in desktop! who cares for FARMVILLE! hahaha. [negative comments will automatically ban! joke].

A: 64 bit was old as since as 1961, the hell with Adobe I’m waiting for 6 years now and still they could not make a native 64bit version of that. In my technical opinion, they can do it . Because if I’m wrong, I won’t believe how they able to build complex software like Phostoshop with extreme accuracy on cropping (yes, imagine how Magic Wand works in as fast as few secs) and other complex algorithm to their Creative Suites and besides they were able to build a 64bit apps version of them already.

  • Almost majority of people still uses 32bit Web Browser application because those 64bit Browsers could not render 3rd party RIA’s like Flash, Java and Silverlight. Because these RIA’s doesn’t offer 64 bit edition of it. That is only a major concern but so far I love 64bit WB (have you heard about Namoroka?).
  • For my opinion (again, technically imbecile speaking),  Maybe Adobe afraid that some jerk (or whoever he/she is) tries to (if possible) to build a 5.6GB of pure Blueray HD movie and load it to their flash player. I couldn’t imagine that.
  • Flash has no room for mobile market, don’t push it.. they don’t even able to fix issue why all mobile phones (regardless of OS/platform) could not exactly render to web browsers (come on Android, its still on beta testing!). What I really meant here is, you will have to login on your Facebook in your mobile web browser and play Farmville!.
  • Either you have a Dual or Quad core mid-sized performance PC. Flash is CPU intensive app. Try to load your browser and play at least 2-3 Youtube videos see what you got there. Imagine if that is in your mobile phone. Even the fastest CPU for mobile (hmm 1Ghz ARM scorpion or better may be) crawls for that.
  • According to Steve Jobs (I read this before promise!,but this is not the exact phrases he said, I converted it for my understanding), Flash is an “Old School” technology trying to cope for the New and exciting Incoming Technology and just trying to survive in the market. HTML5 promises to removed or lessen the use of 3rd party RIA’s such as Flash, Silverlight or even Java. Web Standards rocks!

Ideas are cheap, work is not

Ideas are sometimes just a piece of crap.

This is my new understanding of that word though a lot of people will just bluff on it. Sometime ago, my boss told me to enforce tighter security on our access point to prevent bastards going in our internal network (by setting up a firewall to would only allow internet access and block the rest) because we don’t have any idea if someone near our office has a Cray XT5 Jaguar running dictionary attack  on us (hey, we’re not doing nuclear research nor are we nuclear physicist here!) . At first I thought that WPA2/AES encryption was so difficult to compromise that this security hardening is not needed until I stumbled into this site and so this is where I found the title of the blog.

Until now I was still thinking (with a little conscience) on why our lone software tester suddenly resigned two weeks ago. I hope he didn’t take our “drinking spree  debate”  personal :( .Anyways,  we were talking and exchanging ideas on how the project should be started, its  infrastructure and target. For secrecy reasons I won’t make it public right now and besides it was my original idea.  We spent a lot of time and a lot of beers that night while talking about it until I figured that something was not convincing for me- that’s where the debate started.  After that night (or day for me because it took some of us until the next morning) I was thinking a lot about the word Idea, and on why and how these things got success and failures. For me it is because:

  • Almost all people wants to get rich by any means as much as possible for just a quick and little effort (Lottery?, or the fastest way here in the Philippines- Enter Politics).
  • Some people (like myself) thinks that there’s a possibility that some people thought of that idea already- before or after you thought of it. (confused? me also but I know they either a Chinese or  Indian). And for that its a matter of time and marketing.
  • For people exposed in IT and the Internet, you can be successful by thinking about something stupid but useful enough for communities to embrace it. 2 of the most popular sites was kind of this but you know what? I embraced them recently and its fun (besides I know that my personal info was included already in their database and for the purpose of their National/HL Security) !
  • Besides porn, most of the interesting things about Internet(and people prefer) is those FREE ones and some of it comes originally from PAID .
  • You really wanted to be famous?  go get your hard-worked  idea and make it Opensource. People love it!
  • You really wanted to be rich? then make it Commercial. If you really don’t care about people.
  • Though Ideas are precious and the fundamental ones, it is still useless until you’ve started working from it. Einstein did that also.
  • Yeah what the hell….  ideas are for sale too. You can become rich as long as you’re a former Theoretical Physicist (sarcasm).

All I am saying was that sometimes things are easier to think but harder to do.

My blog was boring

My 3rd blog today, Having noticed this site sucks.. it was just all about me (well read my fucking domain! does it say yourblog.michael-yap.com or ourblog.michael-yap.com?).

Blogs should be entertaining, helpful and content wise (aka for community seekers who wanted to get info from you). Admittedly it was also my doing, the truth is that I am not totally allowed to post anything related to my job for security reasons. Because of the fact that I used to maintain a lot of servers before (but now, its not that big anymore because we have a new guy already) my boss and I agreed for confidentiality ek ek that I could not post a single line script, code or any how to’s even if I would like to. The community have helped me with some of it but I could not repay them back though I’m not your typical open-source guy and to be honest I have no time to read their GNU nor support them a hundred percent. There’s a limitation for all things. If Google supports open source why don’t they also give the source code of their search engine? plain and simple this is what I also mean. Charles Darwin Theory of Evolution, survival of the fittest. The Joker’s infamous quote “If you’re good at something, never do it for free.”. Well man I’m not good at selling stuffs but hardly just developing a software. Don’t you think in this world today that when they get some of your ideas and gets famous with it, you will also be famous?will you also be rich like them?If you really wanted to help then participate in Haiti its the best move you’ve got.
