Ideas are cheap, work is not

Ideas are sometimes just a piece of crap.

This is my new understanding of that word though a lot of people will just bluff on it. Sometime ago, my boss told me to enforce tighter security on our access point to prevent bastards going in our internal network (by setting up a firewall to would only allow internet access and block the rest) because we don’t have any idea if someone near our office has a Cray XT5 Jaguar running dictionary attack  on us (hey, we’re not doing nuclear research nor are we nuclear physicist here!) . At first I thought that WPA2/AES encryption was so difficult to compromise that this security hardening is not needed until I stumbled into this site and so this is where I found the title of the blog.

Until now I was still thinking (with a little conscience) on why our lone software tester suddenly resigned two weeks ago. I hope he didn’t take our “drinking spree  debate”  personal :( .Anyways,  we were talking and exchanging ideas on how the project should be started, its  infrastructure and target. For secrecy reasons I won’t make it public right now and besides it was my original idea.  We spent a lot of time and a lot of beers that night while talking about it until I figured that something was not convincing for me- that’s where the debate started.  After that night (or day for me because it took some of us until the next morning) I was thinking a lot about the word Idea, and on why and how these things got success and failures. For me it is because:

  • Almost all people wants to get rich by any means as much as possible for just a quick and little effort (Lottery?, or the fastest way here in the Philippines- Enter Politics).
  • Some people (like myself) thinks that there’s a possibility that some people thought of that idea already- before or after you thought of it. (confused? me also but I know they either a Chinese or  Indian). And for that its a matter of time and marketing.
  • For people exposed in IT and the Internet, you can be successful by thinking about something stupid but useful enough for communities to embrace it. 2 of the most popular sites was kind of this but you know what? I embraced them recently and its fun (besides I know that my personal info was included already in their database and for the purpose of their National/HL Security) !
  • Besides porn, most of the interesting things about Internet(and people prefer) is those FREE ones and some of it comes originally from PAID .
  • You really wanted to be famous?  go get your hard-worked  idea and make it Opensource. People love it!
  • You really wanted to be rich? then make it Commercial. If you really don’t care about people.
  • Though Ideas are precious and the fundamental ones, it is still useless until you’ve started working from it. Einstein did that also.
  • Yeah what the hell….  ideas are for sale too. You can become rich as long as you’re a former Theoretical Physicist (sarcasm).

All I am saying was that sometimes things are easier to think but harder to do.

My blog was boring

My 3rd blog today, Having noticed this site sucks.. it was just all about me (well read my fucking domain! does it say yourblog.michael-yap.com or ourblog.michael-yap.com?).

Blogs should be entertaining, helpful and content wise (aka for community seekers who wanted to get info from you). Admittedly it was also my doing, the truth is that I am not totally allowed to post anything related to my job for security reasons. Because of the fact that I used to maintain a lot of servers before (but now, its not that big anymore because we have a new guy already) my boss and I agreed for confidentiality ek ek that I could not post a single line script, code or any how to’s even if I would like to. The community have helped me with some of it but I could not repay them back though I’m not your typical open-source guy and to be honest I have no time to read their GNU nor support them a hundred percent. There’s a limitation for all things. If Google supports open source why don’t they also give the source code of their search engine? plain and simple this is what I also mean. Charles Darwin Theory of Evolution, survival of the fittest. The Joker’s infamous quote “If you’re good at something, never do it for free.”. Well man I’m not good at selling stuffs but hardly just developing a software. Don’t you think in this world today that when they get some of your ideas and gets famous with it, you will also be famous?will you also be rich like them?If you really wanted to help then participate in Haiti its the best move you’ve got.
